Kitchen and Bathroom
Resurfacing is a fast, easy, cost-effective way to update your kitchen or bathroom without the cost and mess associated with demolition and replacement. Most of the fixtures we look at have an outdated color, are hard to clean or have lost their luster and shine, but they are strong and solid. Surface restoration restores your fixtures surfaces, extending their life in most cases for 15+ years to come.
No. Porcelain is a glass that is fired onto the surface at temperatures around 1600 degrees. The porcelain finish is hard and resistant to scratches.
Resurfacing on the other hand, is the application of an acrylic polyurethane onto the existing surface and does not require extreme temperatures to cure onto the surface. While the new finish may not be as hard as the original porcelain, it is extremely durable. The expected life of a newly refinished fixture is 15 to 20 years.
Many surfaces in your bathroom and kitchen can be resurfaced:
- Bathtubs, Showers and Sinks
- Porcelain
- Cultured Marble
- Acrylic Surfaces
- Antique Claw Foot Tubs and Sinks
- Ceramic Tile
- Walls
- Tub Surrounds
- Showers
- Floors
- Countertops
- Vanities
- Laminate
- Cultured Marble
- Ceramic Tile
- Solid Surface
Michael’s Resurfacing uses the most technologically advanced coatings available. These finishes are designed to stand up to daily use and do not require special care. However, like any bathtub, laminate, tile or manmade surface, a refinished surface can be chipped, cut or burned if it is abused. However, unlike these other surfaces, Michael’s Resurfacing can repair and return a refinished surface to like new.
Yes! Bathtubs, tile walls, countertops, and fiberglass fixtures are warranted for 5 years. The warranty covers workmanship and adhesion failure of the new coating, unless specified otherwise.
Concrete
Concrete replacement generally requires heavy equipment that can cause severe damage to much of the surrounding area, including landscaping and sidewalks some areas simply are not accessible and must be removed with smaller equipment or sledgehammers, etc. A large portion of that concrete winds up in landfills. Once it is replaced, you simply have a brand-new surface that is subject to stains, oil absorption, spalling, cracking and salt damage.
Our acrylic systems require no heavy equipment and cause minimal landscape or environmental damage. Installation usually takes only a few days, depending on size and conditions. It can be custom designed to match your home, adding beauty and value to your home and neighborhood. When it is complete, it is not only beautiful, but will resist stains, oil spills, and salt damage. New concrete is just that – concrete.
We cannot eliminate the heaving of concrete, as it is a natural occurrence. However, after application, the surface will be denser, and much less porous. Large cracks that previously allowed greater amounts of water penetration can be reduced. Consequently, less water is retained, and the effects of heaving cased by freeze cycles should be noticeably reduced over a period of time.
No. Because it is an acrylic, it remains flexible, yet extremely durable. Freeze/thaw cycles cause concrete to expand and contract. Because the acrylic system is essentially part of the concrete surface, it moves with the concrete and not against it, as do other products like tile, slate, pavers, asphalt or concrete patches.
The protective properties of the sealer leave a non-porous finish. The majority of stains due to oil and grease wash off with mild detergent. Salt, deicers, etc. have little to no effect. In addition, because of its unique UV (ultraviolet) additive, discoloration due to exposure to sunlight is greatly reduced. Darker colors, especially reds, may fade slightly over a long period of time. It should be noted, however, that periodic cleaning and reapplication of sealer will help maintain the coating’s beauty for many years to come.
Our acrylic system should not show abnormal wear, provided the acrylic sealer is replenished as wear occurs. We estimate this to occur no sooner than every 2 years under normal conditions. As long as one of our suitable sealers is in place, this protective coating should absorb normal wear. Any scuff marks etc. generally disappear with a fresh application of sealer.
Although our acrylic system is extremely durable, it is not indestructible. The rule of thumb is this: If it will scratch, chip or damage concrete, chances are it will damage the acrylic surface also. Exercise caution when setting heavy things on it. Take care not to drag heavy items that could scratch it. Periodic washing and resealing is all you should have to do to maintain the surface. Clean oil spills and the like as quickly as possible to keep it looking new.
Expansion joints and cold or control joints are necessary to prevent cracking of the concrete. Concrete must be allowed to expand and contract with temperature changes. These joints provide a “controlled crack” for this movement. All expansion joints are left in place; we cannot cover them up. We also re-cut all existing joints a little deeper to ensure that when it does move, it moves where we want it to and not at some undisclosed weak spot.
ABSOLUTELY! All cracks are repaired using high strength epoxies prior to applying the skim coat. New tension control joints are then cut, or existing ones cut deeper, to alleviate the tension and allow for the movement that initially created the crack. (Note: Due to the multitude of parameters that can cause cracks, cracks cannot be guaranteed against re-cracking; however, cracks that return are often barely noticeable.)
MOST DEFINITELY! Our acrylic systems are the ideal solution for pool and spa areas. They are non-skid, cooler than concrete, and will not stain or be adversely affected by pool chemicals. It also provides a perfect transition from pool to yard, adding that finishing touch like no other product can. Because of its versatility, a stencil can be used to indicate depth markings or areas of safety concern.
