Caring for Aging Parents (Part 3)

Bathroom Safety should be a major concern for anyone reaching that age where getting around starts to become difficult. According to the National Institute on Aging, 80% of falls in seniors occur in the bathroom, all due to slippery floors and surfaces. There are several solutions to this problem many face every day such as bathmats, rugs, and handrails. Bathmats can get residue and buildup due to the dark moist environment they sit in for the majority of their life. That being a major downside, try placing a bathmat, start securing your bathroom by taping down rugs or removing them all together. As long as you have some kind of support or emergency precaution, that should ease your mind. Adding a Shower seat is also a phenomenal addition to an aging person’s home. They allow for easier cleaning and stability in the shower, and provide a place of safety if found suddenly exhausted or lethargic. A grab bar is also an excellent choice for someone who needs stability in the shower but maybe doesn’t have enough room in their shower for a shower seat. It truly is important to reevaluate the current condition of your aging family member’s bathroom and what they may need to feel safe in the home. Different people live in different homes and all have different preferences; Remember that and you’ll be better off in the long run.
