Caring for Aging Parents (Part 2)

Clutter is something most of us aren’t too fond of, and when cleaning out our parent’s home it’s something that we may run into. There are several ways to improve the living situation for an aging family member. Removing the clutter, securing rugs, and evaluating the home for damage, and pre existing conditions of the home. By doing this you are able to see the potential in the home and end up maximizing the living space altogether. Lighting is one of the easiest first additions for senior friendly living. Adding a few lamps throughout the home makes it easier for seniors to roam about the home making each step confidently. Make the space around them reflect an easily accessible, well lit area they can relax in so they can be as comfortable as possible. Organizing just a little bit can also help increase mobility and allow for easier access to everyday household objects, like the coffee maker, or an electronic on a high shelf. Tight spaces will do more harm than good, like small doorways, small bathrooms, and closets. Opening a room up is much safer, especially without large objects that act as obstacles at times. Add a grab bar to the side of the stairs if needed, try widening doorways to give a little extra space to maneuver through. Always keep in mind when redecorating, or making additions to someone else’s home, try to keep them in the loop and see what they’d be open to.
