Caring for Aging Parents (Part 1)

Keeping our parent’s safe may not be a concern to the everyday person, however at some point there will be a time when your parent’s will need your help in taking care of themselves. You should get to know your parents/aging family member’s needs first before anything. Doing this allows you to know your role better, and help you have a better understanding about what you will need to better take on this task. Looking at it from the physical aspect first we have to ask ourselves these questions; Are they able to safely make it around the home without struggle? Any difficulty going to the bathroom or getting in the tub? Are they having flare ups and or joint aches? Diving into their life will really give you insight on what they really need, looking at the home in person is also a great way to get a visual on what is needed or could be. For the bathroom there are plenty of solutions like bath mats, grab bars, and slip resistant rugs. For anyone with wood and or tile throughout the home which can get slick there are always rugs and ways to secure them. Sometimes making the smallest adjustment can help them settle into a safer, cleaner, and brighter environment.
